TARGET closing days
The six days a year the TARGET system is closed — and therefore the days that are not SEPA Inter-PSP Business Days. Computed from the rule published by the European Central Bank, year by year, with the Easter each one derives from.
TARGET closing days
TARGET, the euro real-time gross settlement system, is closed on exactly six days a year, plus every Saturday and Sunday: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, 25 December and 26 December. This has applied since 2002 and the list has not changed. These are the days that are not SEPA Inter-PSP Business Days, so no interbank settlement takes place on them — which is why a direct debit due date falling on one settles on the next open day instead. National bank holidays are not included: TARGET is a European system and stays open on them. Easter is the Gregorian one, which excludes the Orthodox date observed in Greece and Cyprus. Three things that are widely got wrong
- National bank holidays are NOT TARGET closing days. TARGET is a European system and ignores national calendars: it is open on 15 August, on 3 October and on 14 July. Only the six days above close it.
- Easter is the Gregorian one. The ECB writes "Good Friday (Catholic/Protestant)", and that parenthesis is not decorative: it excludes Orthodox Easter, which can fall up to five weeks apart. Greece and Cyprus observe the Orthodox date nationally; TARGET does not.
- An Inter-PSP Business Day is not a Banking Business Day. This calendar defines the first: the day interbank settlement happens, which is what a direct debit due date runs on. The second — "a day on which PSPs in the relevant jurisdiction are generally open for business with customers" — varies by country and by bank, is what a credit transfer executes on, and cannot be derived from this calendar.
