R24 - Duplicate Entry
The RDFI believes it has received the same entry twice - trace number, date, amount and other data match an entry it already processed. This rejection is final: resubmitting the same payment will fail again — resolve the underlying situation first.
What this code means
The RDFI believes it has received the same entry twice - trace number, date, amount and other data match an entry it already processed.
Typical causes
- The same ACH file was transmitted twice
- A retry loop in the originating system re-sent an entry that had already settled
- Duplicate batch created during a failed upload
What to do
Do not reinitiate. Investigate the originating system for a double-submission before sending anything further; re-sending will compound the duplicate.
What it looks like in an ACH return
The return arrives as an Addenda Record (type 99), 94 characters wide. The return reason code sits in positions 4-6.
